It All Started With
One Mom, Four Kids, And A Big Summer Question….
It started with a simple question:
“So… what are my kids doing for summer camp?”
And the honest answer? I didn’t know yet.
Five years ago, as a mother of four living in the U.S., I was deep in the summer camp hustle—setting alarms in January, refreshing pages at midnight, and racing to secure one of twenty coveted spots in STEM or coding camp. It was a wild chase. But I did it because I knew how important summer was: not just for keeping kids busy, but for sparking joy, building confidence, and helping them grow.
Fast-forward to today—I’ve moved my family of six to Lagos, Nigeria. And this will be our first full summer here, no we do not plan to travel to the abroad. I was excited… but I noticed something surprising: no one seemed to be planning ahead for camp. I started asking around.
“Should I be booking now?”
“Are camps already full?”
Camp directors laughed and shook their heads. “Nigerian parents? They wait until the weekend before,” they said. “Then everyone starts calling and begging for a slot.” It turns out, many families don’t know where to start. They rely on WhatsApp groups, school admins, or whatever pops up last-minute. Camp directors plan for 10 kids, and suddenly 30 show up on Monday.
I knew we could do better.
